- February 6: Thurl Ravenscroft is born.
- August 24: Lieutenant Harry Colebourn stops at White River Ontario, Canada, on his way to fight the ongoing war in Europe Andy purchases a small black female Canadian bear cub (for $20) and names her Winnie, after his home town of Winnipeg
- October 3: Harry Colebourn boards the S.S. Manitou (which is headed for England) along with a small cub bear he has named Winnie. His regiment will ultimately be sent to the battlefields of France and Colebourn will leave Winnie with the London Zoo.
