"Pooh Oughta Be In Pictures" is the first episode of the first season of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It premiered on January 17, 1988.

Synopsis[]

After watching a monster movie, Pooh and his friends decide to make their own movie, with Pooh being cast as the hero, Tigger as the monster and Piglet as the victim. But things go awry when Tigger’s monster costume is mistaken for a real monster by the others, and Piglet is particularly terrorized. More than the usual, that is.

Plot[]

Christopher Robin made a deal with his mother that he can go to the movies with Pooh, Piglet and Tigger if he eats his carrots. Christopher Robin hates vegetables, but still eats them and faints afterwards.

Much to Piglet’s dismay, they go to see Birdzilla, a monster movie instead of a cartoon which he initially thought they were seeing. Pooh tries with no success to assure Piglet it is only a movie. Piglet has his eyes closed most of the time while Tigger is unimpressed with the monsters. Pooh loses his hunnycrunch bars on the floor when Piglet jumps onto him in fear of a giant spider in the movie. Piglet helps look for them, but steps gum which takes the shape of a spider web that both he and Pooh get stuck in. Christopher Robin rescues them and says the spider is not real. Piglet covers his eyes while repeating what Christopher told him. Meanwhile, Tigger ask to switch seats with Pooh to see if it will make the movie scarier. As they move, Pooh's chair flings Piglet to the ceiling where he gets spooked by a gargoyle and fall into Christopher Robin's popcorn, which he decides to stay hidden in. Tigger tries to convince Piglet not to be scared and he, Christopher and Pooh explains in song that monsters are make-believe. However the usher does not like the mess they are making, forcing then to flee.

Back in the woods, Christopher Robin, Pooh and Tigger decide to make their own scary movie. Pooh plays the hero with a white scarf while Tigger is a gigantic monster, but he keeps his costume a secret. Piglet plays the one who gets chased by a monster, much to his disliking.

Tigger puts on his monster costume, which is a giant carrot. He goes to Rabbit's garden and inadvertently scares Rabbit, who thinks it is a real monster, into promising to never eating carrots again. Tigger tries to tell Rabbit who he really is, but the zipper is stuck and Rabbit thinks the carrot has eaten Tigger. He runs away and alerts the others while they are filming the movie, in the process causing the film from Christopher Robin's camera to roll away. He goes to retrieve it while the others run away when Tigger catches up, still trying to clear up the confusion and ask for help out of his suit. They hide in a log and discuss a plan to capture the carrot and save Tigger.

In their plan, Rabbit uses cymbals to scare the carrot into a hole while Piglet covers it with honey. Tigger shows up, but their plan goes awry and they all fall into the hole except Piglet, who drops the honey pot over himself. Tigger gets freed from the costume and everyone jumps out of the hole. The others try to bury the carrot until Tigger finally clears up that it is a costume. Upon this realization, Rabbit laughs in overjoy and throws the ruined costume over at a large branch. However, Piglet is upset at not being brave enough to help Pooh in his time of need. Pooh tells him everyone gets afraid once in a while, but Piglet just sadly walks home. In the blustery rainy stormy evening, Pooh visits Piglet and brings him his hero scarf to cheer him up, but Piglet is still upset and hiding under his chair. Pooh leaves him the scarf and decides to get Christopher Robin to help Piglet with his problems. However, the stray costume loosens from the branch due to the wind and lands on Pooh, who starts calling for Piglet's help after the costume sends him tumbling. Piglet grabs Pooh's scarf, runs after Pooh and saves him.

The next day, Pooh, Christopher, Tigger and Piglet make another monster movie with Piglet playing the hero and Tigger using a puppet instead of a costume for the monster. They watch it and are all very satisfied, especially Piglet. Later, Christopher Robin and Pooh discuss Piglet’s bravery. Pooh expresses how glad he is they are over their fear of carrots, but Christopher says his mom is preparing broccoli for dinner. Pooh suggests they skip dinner and go right to breakfast instead, to which Christopher calls him a "silly old bear."

  • Piglet: “I don’t mean to complain, but I’m afraid... I’m scared.”
  • Pooh: “Oh, don’t worry Piglet, popcorn can’t hurt you.”

  • Pooh: “Christopher Robin, are you sure heroes always wear white scarves?”
  • Christopher Robin: “They do in the movies, Pooh Bear. The white scarf makes them heroes.”

Trivia[]

  • This episode was recorded on January 4, 1988.
  • This episode marks the first of several instances in the Winnie the Pooh franchise:
    • As the first episode of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, this is also the first animated Pooh production not to be based on stories from the original Pooh books by A. A. Milne.
    • The first time Jim Cummings voices Winnie the Pooh and Ken Sansom voices Rabbit.
    • The first episode with David Block, Terence Harrison and all their friends.
    • The first time the town near the Hundred Acre Wood or any place outside the wood is shown.
  • This episode has never been released in VHS or DVD in the United States, but has in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Japan and China on a VHS tape with "Trap as Trap Can" called Hundred Acre Hero. It has also been viewable on the streaming service Disney+ since its launch in 2019.
  • It is possible that the way the characters try to capture the Backson in the 2011 film is a reference to how the characters try to mistakenly capture Tigger in this episode, as they both feature them digging a large pit in the ground for the monster to fall in.
  • When the episode aired on ABC, the background music is different when the gang is at the theater. When it aired on Disney Channel and Disney Junior, the background music of that scene change.
  • "Birdzilla" is a parody of Godzilla.
  • This episode has the same Video with Bonus Feature.
  • In This Sing-Along VHS, a still of Pooh and Christopher Robin while the camera zooms out to the night scene and the silhouettes of them is used from The Opening Sequence.
  • The usher's voice bears a striking resemblance to that of Jack Nicholson.
  • In this first episode, Tigger gets mad.
