To Catch a Hiccup is the second segment of the first episode of the second season of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It originally aired on September 9th, 1989 on ABC.

Synopsis[]

When Piglet gets hiccups, he cannot attend Pooh’s lunch. Tigger, Piglet, Owl, and Rabbit attempt to get rid of the hiccups so Piglet can attend the lunch with Pooh.

Plot[]

Piglet is humming happily because he’s inviting Pooh for a "friendship lunch". Pooh wants to give a "best friend gift" (honey) to Piglet, but Piglet has the hiccups and, due to hiccuping whenever he tries to speak, he can’t say so.

When Pooh came, he heard something and he thought there was something in his red shirt, but actually it was Piglet hiccuping. Piglet bounces all over with the hiccups, and Pooh initially thinks it's a game, but because Piglet won't talk to him, he thinks he offended Piglet and starts to leave. Still trying to explain, Piglet tries holding his breath, only to hiccup so much while doing so, he inflates like a balloon and then launches into the air, allowing Pooh to leave.

Tigger ’encounters’ him and wants to help. He makes Piglet drink a bucket of water, though it only makes Piglet so bloated and waterlogged to the point where, when he hiccups, water shoots from his ears. Owl helps by having Piglet stand on his head to make the hiccups "hicc down", but his method fails too. Rabbit makes a "hiccup trap", with a cake, but it catches Eeyore instead because he likes cake. Pooh wants to get Piglet some honey to apologize for offending him, so he walks off with the jar of honey.

At night, Tigger, Owl, Rabbit, and Piglet are working at it again. Tigger puts Piglet in a mine cart, saying that hiccups are cowardly and they try to scare them out. Owl and Rabbit make a ’monster’ and dress up as it, with a white cloak, and a jack-o-lantern with a carrot nose for a head, and call it the Stumpety Bumpety. Tigger thinks it isn’t scary enough.

Just then, Pooh, who has his honey jar stuck on his nose and mouth, runs up to the edge of a cliff, screaming in fear. Tigger gasps in horror exclaiming, “It’s the REAL Stumpety Bumpety!” and he and the "Stumpety Bumpety" run off screaming, and it bumps into a tree and separates into Rabbit and a caped Owl. The head falls on Tigger’s tail, and he screams that it’s after them. Piglet thinks it’s very quiet until he sees everyone ambush him by jumping out of the bushes screaming. Piglet is so startled his hiccups move the mine cart down the hill and he crashes into Pooh.

Piglet thanks Pooh for saving him and removing his hiccups. Then he explains what happened earlier, and Pooh finally understands. Rabbit and Owl and Tigger are still on the run until they can’t go anymore. The "Stumpety Bumpety" crashes through the bushes at them, but it turns out to be Piglet and Pooh. Piglet says he lost the hiccups. Tigger asks where they went, and he, Rabbit, and Owl start hiccuping. Piglet needs to cure it, and they take off screaming!
